Sudbury celebrates a bumper harvest of new physicians

Sudbury recruited 23 physicians in 2011, one more than in the preceding record-setting year.

Eleven of the 23 new physicians are originally from Northern Ontario or were trained through the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. The new physicians include family physicians and specialists in cardiac care, critical care, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, plastic surgery and internal medicine.

“An academic health sciences network, with affiliations with a medical school and university is a powerful recruitment element,” said Dr. Denis Roy, HSN president and CEO. “This influx of new physicians to our health-care institutions and community will have a tremendous impact on quality and access to patient care.”

The addition of the 23 new physicians brings the city’s total to 149 since co-ordinated recruitment efforts began in 2000 with the support of the City of Greater Sudbury and the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce.
